Virtual View Part 2

Based on the reading what learning that surprised me was the presence of Virtual Schools that were international. I did not the the number of established online school that were in so many countries. I also did the know the establishment of Virtual Schooling as early as the beginning of the the Web. I did not have any thoughts of this are from my first post.

For the most part, the things that I did post about my familiarity with Virtually Schooling in the K-12 setting, (although limited) was pretty accurate. What stood out and was most interesting the with some Virtually Schooling be a state mandated. I believe with growth of the online learning, incorporating a mandate is not a bad thing. The growth of online learning is grown rapid especially with the reading mentioned of millennial learners. I can't do anything but grow from there.

I also believe that it is a total myth about online teaching being easy. I think that it is just the opposite and challenging for teachers to teach online. My major reason for mentioning this is because of the unknown type learning audience that you have more so to fit the  major learning objectives for achievable outcomes.

  1. LaCema, I agree with you having online classes for K-12 is a good idea since, now more and more professions get completed virtually. Well this being my adulthood point of view. My high school self will think is too much to have an online class to attend outside of school hours, and would have been better for me to complete the course during school hours.

    1. Rosio, your high school self think is interesting. I believe that although virtually/online learning has been and is still on the rise, socializing and verbal communication with our new generations is falling by the waste side. Because our new generations and millennials depend and communicate so much using technologies, there social skills and common verbalization lack. It is still necessary for this generation to have verbal skills for obtaining new jobs and to enhance there careers. With that said and to your point, virtually schooling with high school students should be well thought out to fit within their time schedule, required learning objectives and continued development for the enhancement of their socialization skills for future professional growth.

  2. I think that online teaching being easy is a matter of perspective. From the perspective of a teacher, online teaching is difficult because of the work that goes into creating a course that appeals to a diverse audience and that advances at the learner's pace, balancing formative and summative assessments. With the advent of viral communications, such as Google Collaborate, it is possible to replicate aspects of face-to-face learning, but these technologies require planning and work.

From the students' perspectives, it may seem as if the teacher is not putting in the same amount of work as the student. For example, when the students are required to write a discussion board entry, they might believe that the instructor wrote a prompt question and then checked the responses a few days later. In reality, the instructor closely monitored the discussions, checking in with groups, clarifying wherever needed, and keeping track of who was making their voice heard and when.

    1. Jeremy, I also think from the perspective of the online teacher relating to "online teaching being easy", "actual experience" with designing, developing and delivery online teaching are major areas to determine if online teaching is easy or challenging (as you noted). Similar to tradition face-to-face teaching, to gain those experiences, skills,
and learning knowledge to become comfortable with teaching, student teaching and shadowing are required. The more experiences that are gained with teaching, (online or face-to-face) the more easier it can become.

    2. I find it interesting that you mention how it becomes easier to engage in online learning with experience. While it is usually true that experience makes it easier to accomplish similar goals, it does require a growth mindset to learn from one's mistakes and make adjustments. Furthermore, a wise person learns from everything, and an effective educator can use the experiences as a student of online courses to aid in instruction.

    3. To your point, experience is your best teachers.
An analysis from an assessment of results of an online course can also aid with determining effective learning outcomes.

  3. I think the state is mandating technology credit for high school students. The schools that mandate online learning is trying to satisfy that credit, so they don't have to offer any separate computer classes.

    1. Interesting. I agree with the state mandating technology in the classroom and online learning classes. I do believe the in doing so and in preparation, new or seasoned teachers and administrators should be effectively trained and skilled to teach this type of delivery. I am not sure if this area is included with the state mandate but it truly would help with stronger qualified teacher and effective online teaching delivery.
